Table positions: Steaua - 4, Craiova - 11

Steaua home table position: -

Craiova  away table position: -

Only the second leg of the Romanian Liga 1 with an interesting fixture between rivals Steaua Bucuresti and Universitatea Craiova.

Steaua Bucuresti has undergone a great transformation in the summer break with no less than 14 new players transfered so far and most of last season’s starting eleven gone.

The team, under a new management has performed impeccably so far winning all friendly matches in the summer as well as their first match of the campaign away to newly promoted U. Cluj. The football played is encouraging for the fans but one down side could be the team’s young players with less experience and time together coped with the high pressure at the club.

Universitatea Craiova has been in a downward spiral the last few years, a team with a long history in the Romanian first league but just above the relegation zone last season.

Tensions are always high between the two team as Craiova failed to win a match on Steaua’s stadium for 20 years now. They will display a young group as well, talented but not showing a great team work. Their first match, although a goalless draw against current champions CFR Cluj will give them confidence.

My pick:  Steaua Bucuresti to win ( over 2.5 goals )

One of the most interesting matches on Wednesday in the Champions League preliminaries as Dutch side Ajax welcome PAOK Thessaloníki.

Ajax is starting off as favorite against the Greeks but as previous years have showed this match and the return leg are more complicated than at first glance.

Another chance for Ajax to enter the most prestigious club competition and expectations could not be higher from both the fans and the board. This first match is crucial for them as they need a clear victory and not to concede any goals from the opposition.

PAOK may not be the most important club in Greece football but they managed to win the Champions League playoff against teams like Olympiakos and AEK proving a great boost in performance from the previous years.

AS an away team they will rely on defense and counter attack hoping for favorable result and a victory in the return leg with their fanatic supporters behind their backs.

My tip:  Ajax to win (over 2.5 goals )

The third qualifying round in the Champions League and the last obstacle for the teams involved before the group stage of the 2010-2011 season.

Sparta Praha will welcome Lech Poznan on Tuesday with the Czechs starting this match as favorites against Polish side not used to European events.

One big plus for Sparta is that the domestic league has already begun and their fitness levels should be higher that their opposition’s but losing the first match of the campaign means they are still vulnerable.

Lech Poznan has a historic chance to reach the groups of the Champions League but Sparta is by far the biggest club encountered in the qualifiers.

They will most likely play a defensive football and try to block Sparta’s attack by all means as the second match will give them the home pitch advantage.

My tip:  Sparta Praha to win (under 2.5 goals )

Vikingur last 5 matches:losslosslossdrawdraw

Another low risk bet on Tuesday as the second qualifying round of Europa League kicks of and Turkish giants Besiktas welcome Vikingur.

Besiktas finished only on the 4th spot of the Turkis Super Lig table thaws having to enter the qualifiers early this season but faced with such an opponent they are certainly on their way to the next round.

The team struggled in the last stages of the domestic league but hopefully with 3 months of preparation they are ready to tackle the new season.

Vikingur is a virtually unknown team from the Faroe Islands, established only 2 years ago they managed to grab the third spot in the domestic league and enter the preliminaries for the Europa League.

They don’t look like they stand any chances especially on the opposition pitch and their current 6th spot in the league speaks for itself.

My tip:  Besiktas to win (over 3.5 goals )

Second qualifying round of the Champions League and bigger manes are entering the competition to secure access to the group stage of this 2010-2011 season.

Partizan Belgrade may be the biggest team in this early stage, the former Champions League winners won the league title last season but the poor performances of Serbian teams lately in European events mean that they are still a long way off for a place in the groups.

They are certainly determined to win against the Armenian team with the manager quoted as saying that they will approach their opponents as if they where Barcelona.

Pyunik Yerevan are widely regarded as outsiders in this double leg fact reflected in the betting odds but this team will certainly put up a good fight.

They have one great advantage over their rivals and it lies in the fact that the Armenian Championship is well under way and their fitness levels may be over Partizan’s.

My tip:  Partizan to win
