After a superb start in Group F of the Champions League, Arsenal will face a new and harder test away to Partizan Belgrade this Tuesday.

Partizan Belgrade is at their first presence in the group stages of UCL since 2003 and their start was not as they expected with a 1-0 defeat away to Shakhtar.

The long absence from the top European tournaments is a big handicap for them and their statistic in the Serbian league is not at all relevant when faced with opposition such as Arsenal. One big advantage will certainly be the packed stadium they will play on as their fanatic supporters will create a huge pressure.

Arsenal got off to a flying start in the UCL with a 6-0 victory over Braga in the first round showing, as they do in the Premier League, a great appetite for offensive play.

They will miss some of their top player in this difficult trip and their defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion this weekend will certainly raise some flags.

My pick:  Arsenal to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Chelsea and Spartak Moskva share the top spot in Group F with only one match played with the English side facing a though game against Olympique Marseille this Tuesday.

After an incredible start to the English Premier League, in which Chelsea looked unstoppable, the team suffered 2 defeats last week. They where kicked out from the League Cup by Newcastle United only to lose in the domestic league 1-0 away to Manchester City this weekend.

They still hold a very good record on home ground in all competition and the match against Marseille provides them with the chance to lose the pressure built up last week.

Marseille on the other hand had a difficult start to the news season both in the Ligue 1 and the Champions League where they lost at home against Spartak Moskva.

They slowly built on their form and managed to climb considerably in the Ligue 1 table and with it increase their morale for this very important match with 2 victories in the last 2 played.

My pick:  Chelsea to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Spanish Giants Still On Course For Champions League Final At Wembley As Man Utd Slip Up

September 17th, 2010 Comments off

The Champions League group stage got underway in the past week and if the amount of goals that have been scored in the first round of Champions League matches is anything to go by then the tournament should be better than ever this year. This season’s Champions League final will be held at Wembley, which is extra incentive for an English club to get there, but the bookies still make an all Spanish final most likely with Barcelona and Real Madrid dominating the Champions League Odds.

Barcelona are the red hot favourites to win back the Champions League this season, they won it two seasons ago and went out to the eventual winners Inter Milan last season in the Champions League semi final. Barcelona look a solid proposition this season’s Champions League and are obviously the most likely winners but there will be another team in the final with them, the bookies make that between Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Real Madrid have flattered to deceive in recent years in the Champions League, normally failing to make it past the first knockout round. Their hopes this year are pinned on Jose Mourinho working his magic, he is seeking to become the first manager to win the Champions League with three different teams having already been successful in the competition with Porto and then Inter Milan last season. They look sure to do better this season but they just don’t seem to be capable of putting up a persistent challenge in the competition and they may have to wait until next year when Mourinho has been able to have more influence on the side.

Chelsea look as though they are ready to finally win the Champions League, they have started the season brilliantly under Ancelotti and are scoring goals for fun. Although many would like to see a Barcelona v Real Madrid final, perhaps this year the dream final is Barcelona v Chelsea, with the teams having had so many great duels in the past. Chelsea look the best of the English challenge with Man Utd only managing a draw against Rangers. Arsenal had an impressive result against Braga but they are likely to come unstuck later in the tournament whilst Spurs will be happy to just reach the knockout stage.

Group H has a clear favorite for the top spot in the form of English side Arsenal but difficult teams as opposition, among them this surprising Sporting Braga of Portugal.

Great start for Arsenal in the Premier League as the London team managed no less than 10 points in the first 4 matches played and more impressively no less than 13 goals scored.

They head out in this match with a very good morale after last week trashing of Bolton Wanderers 4-1 showing great determination and will power to score 3 times in the second half.

Sporting Braga where runners-up in the last season of the Portuguese Liga and confirmed their strength in European tournaments by eliminating the mighty Sevilla in the playoffs of the Champions League.

No doubt their strong point consists of home matches whilst they struggle away winning only one match in the last 5 played whilst traveling.

My pick:  Arsenal to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Group E of the Champions league kicks off this Wednesday with a very exciting match between Bundesliga champions Bayern Munchen and Serie A runners-up AS Roma.

Although their season debut was was ecstatic with a victory in the Super Cup against Schalke 04 and a late goal to bring them 3 points against Wolfsburg in the first leg of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munchen lost ground as they lost surprisingly away to Kaiserslautern and ended in a goalless draw against Werder Bremen last week.

Hopes are high for them in the Champions league as they are the runners-up of the competition last year and the team is in desperate need of a morale boosting performance for the though games ahead.

AS Roma’s season so far is disastrous, the team managed only one point in the Serie A in 3 matches played and more worrying conceded no less than 8 goals while scoring only 2.

It seems their main weak point is the defense and with a match away to Bayern they will try to focus more on this by closing all paths to the goal.

My pick:  Bayern Munchen to win ( under 2.5 goals )
