Probable lineups

Atletico Madrid: Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Filipe, Suarez, Gabi, Adrian, Diego, Turan, Falcao

Athletic Bilbao: Iraizoz, Iraola, Martinez, Amorebieta, Aurtenetxe , De Marcos, Iturraspe, Herrera, Susaeta, Llorente, Muniain

Europa League Final on Wednesday the 9th of May with two Spanish Clubs taking to the field as Atletico Madrid welcomes Athletic Bilbao in Bucharest, Romania.

Although a very though fixture to predict is seems that Atletico Madrid has a slight advantage, at least in terms of betting odds, given by their better Primera Division ranking and their superior run in Europa League so far.

Two matches where played between the two teams so far this season giving us a better reference for the Final ahead with both teams managing home wins in spectacular games, 3-0 victory for Athletic Bilbao in the start of the season and a 2-1 win for Atletico Madrid in the last game between the two.

Atletico Madrid managed to reach this final with an incredible 11 game winning streak in Europa League, they finished top of Group I with a comfortable four points advantage over second Udinese and continued to eliminate Lazio, Besiktas, Hannover 96 and Valencia in the semi-final stage.

A good form for Atletico in overall with no less than five victories in their past seven matches played, holding the 5th spot in the Primera division with one more round to go.

Athletic Bilbao was a true surprise in the Europa League this season, as their opponents, managing to finish top of Group F ahead of teams such as Salzburg and PSG only to run past Lokomotiv Moskva, Manchester united, Schalke 04 and Sporting Lisbon in the semi-final. Reaching the final after eliminating adversaries ranked much higher than that of Atletico Madrid.

Their overall form is not that good, no victories for them in their last three matches played, losing against Zaragoza and Real Madrid and finishing in a goalless draw against Getafe last week, nevertheless whilst resting their top players for this fixture.

My pick: Atletico Madrid  to win ( Over 2.5 goals )

After the Champions League games have concluded it’s time for Europa League to take the spotlight with it’s semi-final stage on Thursday, two very interesting fixtures being played with Portugal’s Sporting CP accompanied by three Spanish teams.

Sporting is the only team outside Spain that made it to this stage of the competition. A good chance for them as they face Athletic Bilbao in this stage but also a crucial home match with the decisive one being played away.

Manchester City and Benfica where the biggest names that Sporting managed to pass in this season of the Europa League and with a great run these past few games in overall they certainly look like favorites to step into the final.

Athletic Bilbao is one of the surprises in this season of the competition, managing a superb run to defeat names such as Manchester United and Schalke in the knock-out phases and playing a very offensive and open football.

Some difficulties for Athletic Bilbao these past weeks though, remaining in the middle of the Primera Division table but with a high motivation in Europe it seems.

My pick: Sporting Lisbon to win ( Over 2.5 goals )

Europa League on Thursday with the return leg of the 8th Finals and a very interesting match as Schalke tries to remount the deficit Twente got last week.

Schalke 04 starting off as favorite as they will have the advantage of the home pitch and their fantastic supporters but with a though mission ahead as Twente leads 1-0 on aggregate.

They managed to get a morale boosting victory last week against Hamburg, putting an end to three straight losses. As far as home matches are concerned, Schalke 04 seems to be a though nut to crack with no less than nine victories in their last 10 games played.

Twente managed a great match last week, scoring the only goal of the match from a penalty and taking advantage of Schalke’s eliminated player to conserve the result.

They are a team that relies more on offensive than defensive and although this can will probably lead to a spectacular game it will also leave gaps in their defense.

My pick: Schalke 04 to win ( Under 2.5 goals )

What's your pick?

  • Schalke 04 (77%, 10 Votes)
  • Draw (15%, 2 Votes)
  • Twente (8%, 1 Votes)

Larnaca last 5 matches: drawwinwinwinwin

Larnaca last 3 away matches: drawwinwin

Group J  table positions: Steaua - 3, Larnaca - 4

Only one spot left in Group J of Europa League with Schalke 04 already claiming the top spor, Steaua Bucuresti welcomes AEK Larnaca in a decisive match.

Steaua Bucuresti is currently on the third spot of the group standings with a total of 5 points in all 5 matches played so far. They sit just one point below second Maccabi Haifa and with the same amount of points as their current opponents.

They will need nothing short of a victory in this match and hope that Maccabi will not win against Schalke to claim the second spot and qualify in the next phase of Europa League.  Their form has improved in latest matches and with it so did their confidence and with a packed stadium behind them, Steaua is the clear favorite of this match.

AEK Larnaca, still retaining chances of it’s own to qualify, but as Steaua they will not depend only on their own performance and will have to wait for the other match in Group J.

Great form for them as they managed to win their last 5 games played including a superb and somewhat surprising victory in the UEL over Maccabi. They where regarded as underdogs in their home game against Steaua but the reality in the field was far from expectation with AEK Larnaca attacking and dominating for a good part of the match that ended in a one all draw.

My pick: Steaua Bucuresti to win ( under 2.5 goals )

What's your pick?

  • Steaua Bucuresti (73%, 8 Votes)
  • Draw (18%, 2 Votes)
  • AEK Larnaca (9%, 1 Votes)

Group D  table positions: Lazio - 2, Sporting - 1

Last matches in Europa League’s group phase with a very interesting situation in Group D where Lazio welcomes Sporting.

Lazio is desperate for a victory in this match to advance into the next stage of the competition. The situation is tricky in the standings as Lazio is second to an already qualified Sporting, but with a total of 6 points, FC Vaslui of Romania can take their place.

TWo victories for them in their last two matches have certainly raised their morale and as the motivated team in this duel they will certainly have the better chance for all 3 points.

Sporting Lisbon, on the other hand, escaped the worries of this decisive stage, managing a total of 12 points in all 5 played to take the group’s top spot with a comfortable lead.

Good form for them as well with three straight victories in their last matches but most likely they will rest om of their top players in this trip.

My pick: Lazio to win ( under 2.5 goals )
