After a very poor placement in the last season table of the Premier League, Liverpool now had to battle it’s way up in the Europa League preliminaries to this decisive 2 leg confrontation against Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Liverpool had no problem in disposing of Rabotnicki of Macedonia in the previous round with 2-0 victories bot at home and away.

Since that point the Premier League competition got off and Liverpool welcomed Arsenal in a match finished undecided 1-1 at the final whistle, a disappointing result especially when considering that Liverpool had the victory in hand until the 90′ minute when Reina’s own goal coasted them 2 points.

Trabzonspor as a club, has been growing in strength and prestige the past couple of years with the third spot of the Super Lig in 2009 and a 5th spot last season with the Turkish Cup in the bag as well granting them access to the Europa League.

No real international experience for them and with a trip to giants Liverpool their odds in getting a positive result are very small.

My pick:  Liverpool to win ( under 2.5 goals )

One of two mathes played on Tuesday in the Europa League final preliminary round as Besiktas welcome Finland’s HJK Helsinki.

Besiktas got off to a great start in the Turkish Super League winning their debut match away to Bucaspor. A good victory for their morale in Europa League and the domestic league.

They are certainly the favorites for a victory here and the qualification in the group stages and after the previous experiences they will be pushing for a clear win and a comfortable trip next week.

HJK is entering the competition after it’s defeat in the Champions League preliminaries against another Eastern team, Partizan Belgrade. Not a great fight put up by them as they managed to concede 5 goals and score only one in both legs.

They currently lead the domestic league table with 3 points above Honka but it’s European history shows virtually nothing.

My pick:  Besiktas to win ( over 2.5 goals )

A low risk bet in the Europa League preliminaries as favorite VfB Stuttgart will welcome Norwegian side Malmo with a 3-2 aggregate.

Vfb  Stuttgart should have no problem in winning this home match and qualifying into the Group stages as they are one of the biggest names in the competition.

One worrying fact would be the 2 goals conceded in the first leg showing that their concentration was not high enough with the victory obtained late in the 82′ minute.

Molde starts this match with a great handicap as they received 3 goals on their own pitch and a one goal victory will not be sufficient.

Their only hope will be the offensive but this tactic could lead to a disaster on Stuttgart’s pitch and a more conservative game with counter-attack in mind would work better.

My tip:  VfB Stuttgart to win ( over 2.5 goals )

OFK Beograd last 5 matches:  losslossdrawwindraw

OFK Beograd last 3 home matches: winlossdraw

Galatasaray last 5 matches:drawwinlosslossdraw

Galatasaray last 3 away matches:winwinloss

Stunning development in the first leg of this Europa League knock-out as big favorites Galatasaray where held to a 2-2 draw by OFK Beograd leaving the final outcome open to any result.

OFK Beograd looked like a team with a very strong morale, they where behind most of the first leg but with 2 inspired substitutions they managed to grab 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of play.

Theoretically having the fan support behind their backs will give them a slight edge but a game against a wounded Galatasaray is never easy especially when taking into account the Turkish side goals.

Galatasaray will have no choice but to push for the offensive even though they are the away team. The 2 goals received in the first leg will not leave them relaxing even if they get a 1-0 lead.

They are certainly feeling the pressure now, with only the 3rd spot last season in the domestic league missing the Champions League for one more year, the Europa League is a must.

My tip:  Galatasaray to win

Rapid W. last 5 matches:  losswinlossdrawwin

Rapid W. last 3 home matches: winlosswin

Beroe last 5 matches:losswinlosslossdraw

Beroe last 3 away matches:winwinloss

Only one match in the Europa League preliminaries on Tuesday as Rapid Wien welcome Bulgarian side Beroe for the decisive match.

After a one all result in the first leg of the tie, Rapid Wien has the better chance of moving on in the competition with the home pitch advantage and a precious away goal in Bulgaria.

The team’s current form is not great especially when referring to their domestic league results managing only 3 points in 3 matches played with a victory against Salzburg this Sunday.

The virtually unknown team from Bulgaria, Beroe already produced a surprise holding Rapid Wine to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the confrontation but as far as their chances go of qualifying, they are very small.

They entered in the competition after winning the domestic cup as their placement in last year’s table was only on the 10th spot. A great disadvantage for them may prove the fact that they did not play any matches in the domestic league so form cannot be at it’s highest.

My tip:  Rapid Wien to win

Another low risk bet on Tuesday as the second qualifying round of Europa League kicks of and Turkish giants Besiktas welcome Vikingur.

Besiktas finished only on the 4th spot of the Turkis Super Lig table thaws having to enter the qualifiers early this season but faced with such an opponent they are certainly on their way to the next round.

The team struggled in the last stages of the domestic league but hopefully with 3 months of preparation they are ready to tackle the new season.

Vikingur is a virtually unknown team from the Faroe Islands, established only 2 years ago they managed to grab the third spot in the domestic league and enter the preliminaries for the Europa League.

They don’t look like they stand any chances especially on the opposition pitch and their current 6th spot in the league speaks for itself.

My tip:  Besiktas to win (over 3.5 goals )

Fulham last 3 EL matches: win draw win

The first final of the new Europa League competition and with top names like Juventus and Liverpool knocked out it’s left for Atletico Madrid and Fulham to settle the scored this night in Hamburg.

Although neither of these teams are high in stats in their domestic leagues, both Atletico and Fulham have proven that they take this competition very serious and are eager to grab the trophy.

Atletico Madrid is 9th in the Spanish Primera Division and with no chances of claiming and European tournament spot for next season this trophy can prove as a savior for what has been so far a mediocre year.

The team’s form is not a great one with only 2 victories in the last 5 matches played in all competitions but their morale is very good as they went past English giants Liverpool in the semi-finals at the end of 2 very close matches.

Fulham was no doubt the surprise of this season in Europa League if not all Europe’s club competitions. Noone would have thought at the start that this small English team will be able to go past big names such as last year’s Uefa Cup winners FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Hamburger SV and especially Juventus.

Only 12th in the Premier League, their coach is confident that it’s team will lift the trophy at the end of the match and celebrate an historic achievement on German soil. They have lost the last 2 matches played but it’s not hard to figure out that they are thinking only at this final.

My tip:  Atletico Madrid to win ( 3-1 scoreline)

Standard last 5 matches: win draw win losswin

Standard last 3 away matches: draw win draw

The quarter-finals of the Europa League will kick off on the 1st of April with quite some surprises between the teams as giants of the European football failed to qualify further. Hamburg will welcome Standard Liege and the German side with the advantage of eliminating another Belgian team, Anderlecht in the previous round.

Hamburg is not showing a good form in all competition in which they have played recently with no victories in the previous 4 matches from which they lost 3 of them and ended in draw against Schalke 04.

Their main problem seems to be the away form as at home they are performing quite well, nonetheless the recent results made the exit the championship title chase in the Bundesliga, and this tournament may be their only trophy objective for this season.

Standard Liege has a great morale after starting the Belgian Pro League playoff with a victory against Charleroi and with 2 victories against the surprising Greek side Panathinaikos in the previous round they have made it clear that they take this competition seriously.

This will be the toughest opponent they have encountered yet and it’s yet to see if they can profit from Hamburg’s poor form and obtain at least a draw.

My tip:  Hamburg to win

Wolfsburg last 5 matches:  win win win drawwin

Wolfsburg last 3 home matches: win win win

Rubin last 5 matches: win draw win drawwin

Rubin last 3 away matches: win Lost draw

With the one all draw in Russia, Wolfsburg is certainly thinking of avoiding Sevilla’s faith in the Champions League and end up with a victory against Rubin Kazan.

Wolfsburg is showing an extraordinary form in all competitions, after the unfortunate first part of the season which left permanent marks especially in the Bundesliga where with only the 8th spot for now there’s little hope of claiming any places in the summer qualifications for an European tournament.

After an unbelievable string of 13 consecutive matches without victory, Wolfsburg managed to win 5 out of the last 6 played, their only interruption was suffers away to Rubin Kazan in a very close and difficult match.

With the Russian championship starting last week, current champions Rubin Kazan where quick to claim top spot with a 2-0 victory over Lokomotiv Moskva and travel to Wolfsburg with a good morale in consequence. The team will certainly report itself to CSKA and try to duplicate their performance by eliminating a favorite of the competition.

The away games have caused them quite some problems in Europe with the last 2 ending in defeat away to Inter and more surprisingly only a draw against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Although a goalless draw will see Wolfsburg advance, this risky strategy is not what we would expect from them and with all hope gone in the Bundesliga this competition remains a good opportunity to show their real force.

My tip:  Wolfsburg to win

Liverpool last 5 matches: win draw win winLost

Liverpool last 3 away matches: draw win Lost

Europa League first leg of the 8th finals and one of the most interesting matches played on Thursday is this clash between Lille and Liverpool.

Lille is still in the fight for the title of champions in the French Ligue 1 but their good performances seem to have taken a turn for the worst with no victories in the last 2 matches of the competition, losing home to Auxerre and grabbing only one point from their trip to Saint Etienne.

These 2 results made them fall dramatically in the overall table, ending up now on the 6th spot but with only 4 points from leaders Bordeaux and Montpellier. They are a great team on home ground proving this with an incredible statistic of their results as they won 12 out of the past 13 matches played on their pitch also showing a great scoring appetite.

The fact that they have overcome an opponent such as Fenerbahce in the previous rounds says a lot about their intentions in the Europa League this year but with a team such as Liverpool their mission is very though.

Liverpool along with Juventus are the 2 giants that look like they don’t belong in this competition, one thing is shore though this tournament has showed over and over again that favorites often fall to the weakest of opponents.

This is joust a consolation run for Liverpool as they were aiming much higher in the Champions League but with oscillating results they managed only the third spot in the group. In the Premier League they are a long way from the top spot, settling for the 6th so far and joust as their adversaries suffered a defeat in the last match of the domestic league away to Wigan.

My tip:  Lille to win
