After putting on a great show in the Euro 2008, Russia is determined not to miss out on the most important competition for national teams, the 2010 South Africa World Cup and now playing at home against Slovenia in the first leg of the knock-out their goal is to get a clear advantage that will make the trip to their rivals a relaxing one.
Russia dropped considerably in the World rankings after their loss on home ground against Germany that determined the final standings in the group and followed by a draw against Azerbaijan in a match that had no real stake.
In the preliminaries, the game against Germany was the only one lost on home ground, the rest where victories over all adversaries. 22 points in total for them and now a high determination in getting the spot in the final tournament.
Slovenia is a team that has used it’s audience with surprising results, and the fact that they finished second in the preliminary group ahead of teams like Poland and especially Czech Republic proves that.
Their status of underdogs may come to their advantage like it did last time they went in a knock out for the World Cup when Romania was the clear favorite but the central European team produced the surprise.
