Debut match of the 2010-2011 season in the German Bundesliga with the raining champions Bayern Munchen welcoming Wolfsburg for the only match on Friday.

A superb season for Bayern Munchen as they managed to overcome the poor start and claim the champions title in the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal and reach the Champions League final where they lost the ultimate trophy against Inter.

Certainly these performances will bring pressure on the players and staff for this new year along with the confidence that they can repeat and improve as their first official match of the season brought the Super up trophy with a 2-0 performance against Schalke 04.

The 2008-2009 champions, Wolfsburg could not keep up last season and ended up on a very disappointing 8th spot of the Bundesliga table after a very modest performance throughout.

Their only official match this year brought a 1-2 victory over a virtually unknown team in the DFB Pokal although they showed off their best 11 but finished at a very tight score managing the victory late in the game.

After a very poor placement in the last season table of the Premier League, Liverpool now had to battle it’s way up in the Europa League preliminaries to this decisive 2 leg confrontation against Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Liverpool had no problem in disposing of Rabotnicki of Macedonia in the previous round with 2-0 victories bot at home and away.

Since that point the Premier League competition got off and Liverpool welcomed Arsenal in a match finished undecided 1-1 at the final whistle, a disappointing result especially when considering that Liverpool had the victory in hand until the 90′ minute when Reina’s own goal coasted them 2 points.

Trabzonspor as a club, has been growing in strength and prestige the past couple of years with the third spot of the Super Lig in 2009 and a 5th spot last season with the Turkish Cup in the bag as well granting them access to the Europa League.

No real international experience for them and with a trip to giants Liverpool their odds in getting a positive result are very small.

With the Bundesliga just around the corner, Werder Bremen should have it’s fitness levels high as they take on a very difficult Sampdoria team.

Werder Bremen had a very good start to the new season defeating the virtually unknown Ross Weiss Ahlen in the league cup with a comfortable 0-4 away display. This victory provides little else than a morale boost and a useful match for the difficult season ahead.

They finished third in the last Bundesliga season and lost the DFB Pokal final to Bayern Munchen by an embarrassing 0-4 scoreline. The preparation period was not great either with useful matches but their defeat at the hands of Fulham standing out, 5-1.

Sampdoria was the most pleasant surprise of the last season in the Serie A, forth in the table when the final line was drawn they showed real strength and teamwork.

A disadvantage for them may lie in the fact that they don’t have any official matches this season and the Serie A is still one month short of starting but if their spirit from the last season remain their defenses will be very though to crack even by Bremen’s offensive force.

A very though match in the Champions League final preliminary round as Russian giants Zenit ST. Petersburg takes on French side Auxerre.

This might be the toughest match of this stage of the competition and the stakes could not be greater, access to the Champions League group stages.

Zenit had a difficult time in the previous round as they managed to defeat Romanian challengers Unirea Urziceni by one goal to nil in aggregate after a goalless draw away and the slightest of victories on home ground.

This will be the first match in the competition for Auxerre, which managed to grab the 3rd spot of the Ligue 1 last year and qualified for this last stage.

Not a great start for them in the domestic league as they managed only 2 point from the first 2 matches played home with Lorient and away to Brest showing lack of determination and some gaps in defense as they conceded 3 goals.

My pick: Zenit to win ( under 2.5 goals )

One of two mathes played on Tuesday in the Europa League final preliminary round as Besiktas welcome Finland’s HJK Helsinki.

Besiktas got off to a great start in the Turkish Super League winning their debut match away to Bucaspor. A good victory for their morale in Europa League and the domestic league.

They are certainly the favorites for a victory here and the qualification in the group stages and after the previous experiences they will be pushing for a clear win and a comfortable trip next week.

HJK is entering the competition after it’s defeat in the Champions League preliminaries against another Eastern team, Partizan Belgrade. Not a great fight put up by them as they managed to concede 5 goals and score only one in both legs.

They currently lead the domestic league table with 3 points above Honka but it’s European history shows virtually nothing.

My pick: Besiktas to win ( over 2.5 goals )

With Ajax off to a disappointing start in the new season of the Eredivisie a though match awaits them on home pitch against a difficult Vitesse.

Ajax could only managed a 2-2 draw away to Groningen in the first leg, not the start they where hoping for with the team losing pace in the end of the match and conceding two goals.

Home matches on the other hand seem to be their specialty as they managed to win the last 15 matches played there in the Eredivisie.

Vitesse got off to a good start, defeating ADO Den Haag 3-1 the final score and getting a good morale boost for such a difficult trip.

Most likely they will play a very defensive match hoping to strike on the counter-attack but if Ajax get’s a goal my thought is that Vitesse will fall fast.

Second leg of the French Ligue 1 and both Valenciennes and Olympique Marseille are still searching for the first victory of the season.

Valenciennes finished the debut match in the same stile as they closed the last season, with a draw, this time away to Nice.

Finishing on the 10th spot last year, the team has no big claims from the Ligue 1 and a relegation worry free placement at the end of this one is their main objective.

Shocking result for the raining champions Olympique Marseille as they lost at home the first match against newly promoted Caen.

They where incapable of getting an advantage over their rivals as Caen scored the opening goal in the 53′ minute only to close the table 4 minutes from the final whistle with a El-Arabi effort.

Wembley Stadium will play host on Wednesday to England’s friendly match against Hungary, first game after the 2010 World Cup campaign.

Although the World Cup campaign was far from expectation and England failed to reach the last stages of the competition losing against Germany, the fans will be behind the team for this friendly match before the Euro 2012 qualifications start.

England is certainly favorite, determined to show great football in front of their fans and wash off the disappointing taste they left this summer.

This match will be a prestigious event for the Hungarian team which is far from a great opponent and it’s results prove this.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup this summer finishing 4th in a relatively easy group and further more failed to win any of the past 4 friendly matches, losing against Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands conceding no less than 12 goals whilst scoring only one and finishing in a 1 all draw against Russia.

After two years without the championship trophy a new opportunity emerges for the team that dominated French football 7 years straight as Olympique Lyon welcome a difficult AS Monaco for the first match of the Ligue 1 season.

Lyon grabbed the second spot last season ahead of Auxerre by only one point and trailing raining champions Olympique Marseille by no less than 6 points.

The team has saw a great come back in the last stages of last year and positive results through out the training break but this will be a very difficult test for them.

AS Monaco where ranked 8th in the last edition of the League 1, middle of the table as it has for the past few years.

New season of the French Ligue 1 will kick off this weekend with many teams hoping for the top spot or a place in next season of the Champions League.

The favorites remains Olympique Marseille, last edition winners with a comfortable lead over the following pack. The team has saw few changes in term of players and this could prove a great plus over their opponents.

One of the regular contenders for the top spot is Olympique Lyon, runners-up of the last season and missing the trophy for 2 years now which means the pressure is mounting among with determination to cut back on past mistakes.

With a disappointing season last year, Bordeaux managed only the 6th spot of the table proving to be far from the form they have showed in the 2008-2009 season when they where champions. This now start provides them with a great opportunity to prove themselves as a top contender and I see them through the first 3.

Auxerre, Lille and Montpelliers completed the top half last year and although Lille was expected to do so, Auxerre and Montpellier where the pleasant surprises.
