Primera Division table positions: Espanyol - 8, Barcelona - 2

Derby in the city of Barcelona on Sunday as local rivals Espanyol and FC Barcelona go head to head in the first round of the Primera division this year.

Espanyol, as usual, the underdog of this battle as they currently hold the 8th spot in the table with a total of 23 points in all 16 matches played.

They have lost their first game of the year, conceding a surprising 2-1 away loss to Segunda Division team Cordoba in the Copa del Rey earlier this week but a game against the mighty Barcelona always brings out the best both in players and supporters.

Barcelona continuing their unbelievable run with 4-0 victory over Osasuna this week in the cup, reaching no less than 8 straight victories in which they conceded only one goal and scoring 34.

They where set to close the gap from bitter rivals Real Madrid which lead the Primera Division at the moment with a total of 40 points before the stage got under way but as Real trashed Granada with ease they can only win this one and wait for another chance.

My pick: Barcelona to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Table positions: Espanyol - 12, Real Madrid - 5

Seemingly a though match ahead for Real Madrid on Sunday as they travel to Espanyol in the 6th round of the Primera Division.

Espanyol with a modest start to the new season managing 6 points in the first 5 matches played placing the team on the 12th spot of the table with a -2 in goal balance.

They managed to win both matches played on home ground in the league so far, against Athletic Bilbao and Getafe but lost all 3 played away making for quite a dramatic difference in results.

Real Madrid currently on the 5th spot of the Primera Division table with a total of 10 points, two below leaders Real Betis and one from bitter rivals Barcelona.

Although it was expected that the two football giants Barcelona and Real Madrid would dominate the competition from beginning to end, it looks line neither has managed to separate from the pack either in terms of results or even play.

My pick:  Real Madrid to win ( under 2.5 goals )

Derby match in the city of Barcelona with champions FC Barcelona welcoming their local rivals Espanyol on Sunday.

Barcelona are 8 points clear at the top of the Primera Division with 4 more rounds to go in this season and only a miracle can rob them of another league trophy.

Morale is high in their camp after their qualification in the Champions League final against Manchester United but the high expectation for this match can leave them without motivation on Sunday.

Espanyol, with a fairly decent season so far, still hold chances in grabbing an Europa League spot for next season as they sit 4 points below Atletico Madrid, the last team to enter the competition.

Their last match of the competition brought them a much needed victory against Athletic Bilbao putting and end to a 4 game dry run.

My pick:  Barcelona to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Espanyol last 3 away match: drawwinlost

Table positions: Valencia  -4, Espanyol -5

Valencia home table position: -9

Espanyol away table position: -13

Closing match on Sunday in the Primera Division with a very interesting dispute as Valencia welcome their table neighbors Espanyol.

Valencia ended the year with a total of 28 points in the league, same amount as their current opponents, but with some oscillating results losing a lot of ground especially in away matches.

They have a modest record in home matches with 4 victories and 3 draws in all 8 played and signs  of improvement in the last few rounds.

Espanyol suffered 2 consecutive defeats in the last rounds of 2010 in the league, away to Athletic Bilbao and and embarrassing 1-5 result at home against Barcelona.

The team looks very strong in home matches but away it’s a different matter as they managed only 2 victories and one draw in all 8 played with a disastrous goal ratio of 5 scored and no les than 15 conceded.

My pick:  Valencia to win ( under 2.5 goals )

Espanyol last 3 away match: lostlostlost

Table positions: Mallorca -9 , Espanyol -8

Mallorca home table position: -4

Espanyol away table position: -20

Six matches in the Spanish Primera Division on Sunday with Mallorca versus Espanyol one of the most balanced kicking off.

Mallorca following the trail sen in the last season with very good performances on home pitch and a great deal of points lost away to modest rivals.

They head into this game with a strong morale after being able to hold Barcelona to a one all draw last week on Camp Nou and with victories in the last 2 played on their pitch they are set as favorites here.

Espanyol acting similar to their opponents in this match, the 8th spot of the table for them with a total of 9 points, all of which obtained on home ground.

They lost all 3 matches played away so far in the new season of the Primera Division unable to score any goals and conceding no less than 8.

My pick:  Mallorca to win ( under 2.5 goals )
