Primera Division table positions: Villarreal - 19, Sporting Gijon - 18

Round 19 of the Spanish Primera Division comes to an end on Monday as Villarreal situation grows more desperate every week, now welcoming another relegation candidate in the form of Sporting Gijon.

Villarreal is on a disappointing 19th spot in the Primera Division table as the team that once fought at the top of the chart has managed to gather only 16 points in all 18 matches played this season.

No less than 10 games have passed without a victory for Villarreal in all competition, their previous success dating back in November against newly promoted Real Betis. Whilst their offensive is still showing signs of life, discreet as they may be, the real problem is the defensive which has conceded no less than 10 goals in their past 5 matches played.

Sporting Gijon is just one step above their current adversaries, with a total of 18 points, they sit just one point from salvation, this after their rather surprising victory over Malaga last week.

Their form in away matches seems to be better than at home, making for a very interesting fixture to watch, any team managing 3 points in this one could get a real boost and grater chances in staying in the Primera Division.

My pick: Villarreal to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Serie A table positions: Real Madrid - 2, Villarreal - 16

Intermediary round in the Primera Division with Real Madrid climbing to the second spot of the table as they welcome Villarreal on Wednesday.

Real Madrid took full advantage of the draw between Barcelona and Sevilla in the weekend and by trashing Malaga, 0-4 the final score, managed to overcome their bitter rivals and place second in the chart, one point below surprising leaders Levante.

No less than six straight victories for Real in latest matches, played both in the Primera division and the Champions League giving them a huge moral advantage for this one, especially as it will be played at home.

Villarreal on the other hand is far form the past season’s performances as they struggle in the lower part of the table with a total of just 7 points in 8 played, only two above the relegation zone.

No victories for Villarreal in their past 6 matches, totaling 3 defeats and 3 draws, a very poor performance for a team used to the top spots in Spain.

My pick:  Real Madrid to win ( over 2.5 goals )

Bayern last 5 matches: winwinwinwinwin

Bayern last 3 away matches: winwinwin

Second day of the first leg in the Champions League group stages as Villarreal welcomes Bayern Munchen on Wednesday in a match that can go either way.

Villarreal with a poor start to the new season as they managed only one point in the Primera division in two played, a humiliating blow from Barcelona in the opening stage 5-0 and a two all draw against Sevilla last week.

They finished fourth in last season’s table and they had to get past OB of Denmark to get in Group A but with the caliber of their adversaries, getting past this stage will be quite an achievement.

Bayern Munchen on the other hand displayed a superb form and although starting the Bundesliga season with a surprising defeat against M’gladback, they now top the table with 12 points in 5 played.

They are strong favorites for one of the top two spots and normally their main opponent will be Manchester City as Napoli and Villarreal should battle it out for the third spot.

My pick:  Bayern Munchen to win ( over 2.5 goals )

  • Bayern Munchen (71%, 12 Votes)
  • Draw (24%, 4 Votes)

Closing match of the first stage to be played in the Primera Division with the only game on Monday as raining champions Barcelona welcome Villarreal.

Barcelona off to a great start to this season as well as they managed to win the Spanish Super Cup against rivals Real Madrid and the European Super Cup against the Europa League holders FC Porto last Friday.

Although showing some problems in their defensive compartment in the double leg final against Real Madrid where they conceded no less that four goals, Barcelona seems to have resolved the issue as they kept the clean sheet against Napoli in the friendly and Porto.

Villarreal with only two official matches this season as they managed to enter the Champions League groups after a disputed two leg tie against Danish side OB.

They have a though time ahead with this trip to Barcelona followed shortly by Sevilla in the Primera Division and Bayern Munchen in the UCL so any points gathered should be very important in the overall configuration of the season.

My pick:  Barcelona to win ( under 2.5 goals )

OB last 5 matches: winwinlosswinwin

OB last 3 away matches: drawwinloss

One of the most interesting fixtures of the night in the Champions League playoff as Villarreal of Spain welcomes Denmark’s OB after a shocking defeat in last week’s leg.

Villarreal regarded as clear favorites for this one after last week’s display away to OB where they managed to dominate the entire match only to be defeated by a huge defensive mistake.

They have yet to start their domestic league run as the La Liga was postponed due to the player’s strike and this could factor in for fitness, nonetheless the chance of getting in the Group stage of the UCL from the Spanish league is not one to be passed off.

OB clearly the surprise of the first round as they where dominated the entire match by Villarreal, playing an all defensive game and managing to strike after a defensive mistake.

They are on a good run when looking at their latest results, no less than 4 victories in the last 5 official matches but their aim tonight will certainly be to defend their lead.

My pick:  Villarreal to win ( under 2.5 goals )
